Como Early Learning Center is a non-profit childcare center serving children ages 16 months to 5 years for families of the University of Minnesota and the surrounding community.  Como Early Learning Center is a NAEYC Accredited, four star Parent Aware rated program that features low teacher to child ratios and class sizes.  

Our Philosophy

At Como Early Learning Center, we believe children deserve high-quality early childhood education and care in a safe, nurturing environment where they feel connected, capable, and valued. We honor each child’s individual strengths, interests, and pace of development while providing thoughtful guidance that helps them grow as learners and members of a caring community.
Our approach is grounded in the High Scope philosophy of active, participatory learning. Children build understanding through hands-on experiences, meaningful choices, and opportunities to plan, carry out, and reflect on their ideas. Our teachers intentionally design engaging learning environments and support children through consistent routines, shared problem-solving, and responsive interactions.
Nature-based play is an essential part of our approach. Outdoor exploration invites children to investigate, create, take appropriate risks, and discover the world around them. Through movement, sensory experiences, and encounters with nature, children develop curiosity, confidence, and an appreciation for the environment.
We place a strong emphasis on intentionally teaching executive functioning and social-emotional skills. Throughout the day, children practice focusing attention, remembering directions, managing impulses, adapting to change, and following through on plans. With patient, consistent support, they also learn to recognize and express feelings, build friendships, cooperate, resolve conflicts, and understand how their actions affect others.
We view kindergarten readiness as a broad foundation that includes language, literacy, mathematics, physical development, independence, and the ability to participate successfully in a group. Through purposeful play and close partnerships with families, we help children develop the skills, confidence, and joy in learning that support success in kindergarten and beyond.
